BC)
Roman Republic Era (True Character of Rome 509 BC
- 27BC)
Roman Imperial Era (Expansive changing era includes
Pax Romana 27 BC - 476 AD)
A Republic is any kind of elected
government
-
Roman Civilization is divided into three eras, Archaic Rome (the development
era), Roman Republic (the true character of Rome), and the Roman Empire
or Imerial Era (the expansive ever changing era)
-
When we study the Roman Civilization we look at what made them successful.
The things that made them successful are also their greatest legacies,
their law, their language and their legions.
-
Because of their diversity and their conquering around the Mediterranean
and into Northern Europe their civilization was spread throughout the European
world. They were able to assimiliate many different cultures into their
own but as others recognized their successes they wanted to be a part of
Rome as well. So the people who were conquered often became more Roman
than the Romans. After 300 AD their civilization included Christianity
which was also spread throughout the European World. The Romans often adopted
what was best of another civilization yet were still able to retain their
successful systems.
-
The Romans left us many ideas on how to hold together such and expansive
and diverse civilization as well great technologies such as road building
and medical advancements.
-
They had a higher standard of living than other civilizations of their
time. (They lived longer, in better conditions, had more than enough food
to live, children lived longer, others seemed to want what they had, other)
They were a "successful" civilization.
-
People were treated with more respect than in other civilizations of the
time. The idea of an elected body and checks and balances which included
individual (citizens) involvement was held up for history to see as successful.
