Roman Time Line
General objectives:
  • Describe the historical development of Greek and Roman societies and their contribution to modern society.
  • Determine how the physical features of an area affect its historical development
  • Evaluate the development of civilizations
  • Specific objectives:

  • Summarize the events and various cultures that led to the formation of Roman culture. (Etruscans, Latins, Sabines etc..)
  • Explain why Rome expanded and what political, economic and social problems this expansion caused
  • Identify the causes & events that led to the conversion of the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.
  • Identify the accomplishments of significant rulers of the Roman Empire.
  • Discuss the development of the Roman civilization during "Pax Roma".
  • Discuss the problems that led to the decline of the Roman Empire.
  • Themes

  • Civilizations develops in stages
  • Certain events impact many of the systems to an extent that changes the nature of the civilization and creates a new stage.
  • If the civilization does not re-invent its systems then it is open to outside invaders and is destroyed.
  • Civilizations have unique characteristics that may be replicated and these become their legacy to us.

    Activities:
    1. Students will choose without introduction whether they would rather be a Patrician, Plebeian, or Equine.
    Choice is made simply by raising hands. Point out differences.

    2. Students will be placed in groups by the teacher in one of the following tribe or province:
    1. Latins
    2. Etruscans
    3. Sabines
    4. Umbrian
    5. Itali

    3. Distribute the time line activity
    4. Student may use the time line on the sheet or may use that as a work sheet.
    5. Student place a least 5 events on the time line from each of the Roman eras.
    6. Students may use either butcher paper or poster boards and place pictures representing elements of Roman Civilization on the time line.
    7. Each student completes chart . Group turns in one time line per group.

    Assessment:
    Time line should indicate the three eras and should have some representation of "rise and fall". Either through a hills and valleys, pyramids, re-creation of life cycles, footprints, etc...
    Each era will be of equal time with the Punic Wars being the mid-point of the entire civilization
    Archaic Period 1000 BC - 510 BC
    Republic Period 509 BC - 44 BC
    Empire Period 27 BC - 476 AD
