Types of Religious Orders

1. Benedictines founded in 6th century
2. Templars and Hospitalers founded during the crusades and combined functions of knights and monks. They cared for the sick and injured and fought to regain the holy land.
3. Franciscans founded in 13th century by St. Francis of Assisi and consisted of begging friars who originally wandered from place to place. usually ministered to lower-class people
4. Dominicans founded in 13th century by St Dominic. also wandered but ministered to educated upper class and combated heresy.
