BUT CAN HE KEEP IT TOGETHER by Johannes Smidt Bismarck accomplishes through strategy what the radicals fail to accomplish through legitimate means. The socialists tried to unify Germany in 1848 with the introduction of a constitution that was rejected by Frederick William who later disbanded parliament. Bismarck, through the Danish War, the Seven Weeks war, and the Franco-Prussian War made all true Germans see the need for coming together. Every one knows that if Germany is unified that they will be the supreme power in Europe. No one will stand in their way. Bismarck knows that German industries are a key factor in the unification of Germany. Let them take from the other countries what has already been accomplished and build on their successes. Now that we are united we can become the most industrialized country in the world. Bismarck has also promised to keep up the social reforms to satisfy those that are concerned about the economy, and to help Germany stay united. He brought Germans together but only time will tell if he and the new kaiser, Kaiser Wilhem, can work together to keep it together. |
