Stage I

1932-Japan leaves the League of Nations

July 1940-Japan occupies Indochina

1940-U.S. retaliated by prohibiting the exportation of steel, scrap iron, and aviation gasoline to Japan

1940-Japan signs a neutrality treaty with the Soviet Union

December 7, 1941-Pearl Harbor attacked

December 8, 1941-US declares war on Japan

December 11, 1941-Italy and Germany declare war on the US

December-January 1942- Japan took British Hong Kong and the Gilbert Islands (now Kiribati) and Guam and Wake Island (U.S. possessions), and they had invaded British Burma, Malaya, Borneo, and the American-held Philippines.

February 1942-British Singapore fell to them

March 1942-Japan occupied the Netherlands East Indies and landed on New Guinea.

April 9, 1942-The American Philippine forces surrendered at Bataan

May 6, 1942-resistance in the Philippines ended with the surrender of Corregidor

Stage II

May 7-8, 1942-Battle of the Coral Sea (Japan loses)

June 4, 1942- Japan loses at the Battle of Midway

August 1942-February 1943-Battle of Guadacanal won by the United States

early 1943-1944-re-taking of islands lost and Allied (US) efforts to secure a stronghold off China in which to launch an offensive on the island of Japan

October 23-25, 1944-3-day Battle for Leyte Gulf won by the Allies secures an area in which to bomb Japan

Stage III

January 4-13, 1945- quickly trained kamikaze pilots flying obsolete planes had sunk 17 U.S. ships and damaged 50

February 4-11, 1945-Yalta Conference (in the Crimea) Stalin agreed to enter the war against Japan within three months after the German surrender in return for territorial concessions in the Far East.

February-June 1945-Island hopping continues

Stage IV-

May 8, 1945- surrender of the German generals V-E Day

July 16, 1945-first test bomb dropped at Almagorda

August 6, 1945-Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima

August 8, 1945-USSR declared war on Japan on and invaded Manchuria the next day.

August 9, 1945-Atomic Bomb dropped on Nagasaki

August 14, 1945-Japan surrenders

September 2, 1945-Japan signs the formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri
